How to move on a budget?
There will probably be a lot of times when you will face the need to move from one place to another. Would it be moving out of your parent’s house or moving in with your significant other, it is an important and energy-consuming event. You need to go through all your staff and pack what you will need, find a way to transport your things from one place to another. This doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. Here are some tips on how you can move on a tight budget.
1.Determine your moving budget
Moving from place to place does not only take a lot of time it also takes money and it is in your best interest to determine how much money. In most cases, you plan your move some time ahead and have enough time to save up and figure out all of the details. In order to be able to “move on a budget” you need to determine what your budget is. Plan everything ahead, know everything that would require you to pay for it. How much will the packing supplies cost you? What about a rental vehicle or gas mileage? What will you need to buy immediately after you move into your new place? What expenses can be omitted and which ones are inevitable? Plan everything from the very beginning put your expenses in chronological order. Create a checklist, count your expenses and try to follow it.
2. Don’t use movers when moving
There are a lot of factors you need to keep in mind when moving from one place to another. Surely, this can be overwhelming but it’s better if you can handle on your own without hiring any outside help. If you figure out all of the costs of hired help this will cost you so much more than spending a little bit more time planning your move by yourself. It’s better and much cheaper to ask your friends or neighbors for help. However, if you are sure about hiring professional movers, be sure that you know all the details of their work. Do they fit your budget?
3. Get your move covered by the employer
This only applies to cases when you are moving at the behest of the business you work for, otherwise, all the moving expenses are solely on you. However, if this is your case you should ask your employer what he/she can cover for you. There are a lot of expenses like transportation and shipping costs, travel expenses, temporary housing, realtor fees and any charges levied by a landlord. It will never be extra to ask for help. What is the worst thing that can happen? However, in the best scenario, some of your moving expenses will be covered.
4. Tax write-offs for moving
If moving out of state is your case make sure that you file two separate state tax returns forms. You also should account for the costs these may incur. Make your research in advance and figure out if there are any tax benefits you can get when moving to a different state. This is especially important when moving close to the tax season.
